Derivative

A derivative is a financial security with a value that is relative upon or derived from an underlying asset or benchmark. Typically a leveraged instrument, it is more susceptible to potential risk and rewards. The most common underlying assets for derivatives are stocks, currencies, bonds, commodities, market indexes, and interest rates. These assets are commonly purchased through brokerages.
