Chanos launched the firm after developing his distinctive contrarian investment strategies early in his Wall Street career as a financial analyst at Paine Webber, Gilford Securities, and Deutsche Bank.
After nearly four decades of managing institutional capital, Chanos closed Kynikos Associates’ hedge fund in late 2024, transitioning the firm into a family office and investment advisory business.
The shift followed several challenging years for short sellers, as prominent bearish positions — including those against Tesla — underperformed amid extended bull markets.
