John Schindler is the Secretary General of the Financial Stability Board, the international organization responsible for monitoring and making recommendations to strengthen the global financial system. Schindler brings over two decades of experience at the Federal Reserve Board, where he most recently served as Senior Associate Director in the Division of Financial Stability. In this leadership role, he helped set the strategic direction for the division and contributed to key policy initiatives. During the Global Financial Crisis, Schindler was seconded to the U.S. Treasury Department as Chief International Economist, where he played a pivotal role in shaping international economic policy. He was also seconded to the FSB Secretariat, further deepening his expertise in global financial regulation and cooperation. In addition to his policy work, Schindler spent more than 15 years teaching at Johns Hopkins University and has published extensively in leading economic and finance journals on a wide range of topics.

Academic History

FEDERAL RESERVE BOARD

  • John Schindler served as Senior Associate Director in the Division of Financial Stability at the Federal Reserve Board (FRB), where he played a key leadership role in shaping the division’s strategic direction and advising on financial stability policies.

  • He was also Senior Adviser to FSB Chair Randal Quarles, strengthening coordination between the Fed and international financial authorities.

  • Schindler was the founding chair of the FRB’s Financial Stability Climate Committee, underscoring his expertise in integrating climate-related risks into financial stability assessments. 

  • During the Global Financial Crisis, he was seconded to the U.S. Treasury Department as Chief International Economist, contributing to critical economic policy decisions. 

  • From 2015 to 2016, he was seconded to the Financial Stability Board (FSB) Secretariat, where he enhanced global regulatory collaboration. 

  • In 2012, he founded the FSB’s Financial Innovation Network and chaired it until 2018, helping the organization better understand and respond to emerging financial technologies.


CAREER & PUBLICATIONS

  • Beyond policymaking, Schindler has had an extensive academic career, teaching for over 15 years at Johns Hopkins University, and serving as a visiting professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and a visiting scholar at the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean.

  • His research has been published in leading economics and finance journals, covering topics such as measuring financial conditions, crisis modeling, and China’s financial system.
