  • Became part of the People's Republic of Chian on 7/1/1998
  • Was part of the United Kingdom before then for 156 years
  • Hong-Kong negotiated special privileges as part of its re-integration into China
    • English would continue to be the official language
    • A border would be maintained with mainland China
    • Mainland Chinese citizens would need a visa to visit
    • Hong Kong would retain a common law system (based on UK law)
    • Hong Kong would continue using the Hong Kong Dollar
  • Over time some of these privileges have been revoked
  • Hong Kong is less independent now (2018) than it was previously
