Steve Butler is Senior Vice President for CBIZ Retirement Plan Services, an industry-leading company that offers a wide range of consulting services for more than 50 retirement plan platforms. He is best known as a leading advocate of retirement plans. He has been in the retirement and employee benefits industry since the early 1970s. During this time, Butler has been credited with some of the earlier Employee Stock Ownership Plans and 401(k) plans installed in Northern California.

RESPONSIBILITIES AT CBIZ RETIREMENT PLAN SERVICES

  • Butler works with plan sponsors to help them meet their organization’s retirement plan goals.
  • He implements the CBIZ RPS proprietary fiduciary risk management process known as The CBIZ RPS Fiduciary Risk Manager™.
  • He provides consulting services to private and public companies, as well as not-for-profit organizations.
  • He provides investment management to individuals, trusts, defined benefit plans, cash balance plans, endowments, and foundations through CBIZ IAS.


TESTIMONIES

  • Butler testified at cost-related hearings conducted by the Department of Labor in 2000.
  • He testified on the subject of hidden costs in March 2007 before the United States House of Representatives Committee on Education and Labor.


PUBLICATIONS

  • Butler has published numerous books on retirement plans. 
  • He has written a weekly financial column for Bay Area News Group newspapers, including the Contra Costa Times, Oakland Tribune, San Jose Mercury News, and the San Mateo Times.
  • He is the originator of the “Butler Index,” an Index of total costs of 401(k) plans that has been featured in articles in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.

  • Butler has worked with the Department of Labor to assist in establishing guidelines to ensure full disclosure of fees and services to plan sponsors.
  • He co-produced a retirement investment pilot program, which was aired on National Public Television stations throughout the country.
