The Black Death was an epidemic of bubonic plague, a disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis that circulates among wild rodents where they live in great numbers and density. Experts have calculated that the Black Death killed 50 million people in the 14th century or 60 percent of Europe’s entire population.
