Government Funding Bills

Government Funding Bills are how the US legislature approves funding for the federal government

There are two ways this can be done:

  1. Individual Appropriations Bills - they typically fund one department/agency
  2. Omnibus Bill - Funds multiple agencies in a combined bill (often too long to be fully read)

  • If a bill is not passed on time, the affected agency or entire federal government might be shut down (with some essential services exceptions)
  • Continuing Resolutions can also be passed that keep budgets at previous years levels until a new bill is worked out
