John Moorlach represents the 37th District at the California State Senate. He began his career in public service in 1994 when he was appointed the Orange County Treasurer-Tax Collector. In this prior role, Moorlach took bold and effective steps to revamp county finances, cut losses, lessen risks, and facilitate efficiencies within government. Moorlach also served on various nonprofit and industry-related boards during his over eighteen years in public practice. He regularly writes and speaks on financial topics.

Academic History

  • Moorlach assumed office on March 22, 2015. His current term ends on December 6, 2020.
  • He is known as the “fiscal conscience” of the California Legislature.
  • He passed the C.P.A. exam in 1978 and earned the Certified Financial Planner designation in 1987.  
  • He earned a Certificate in Public Finance in 1995.
  • A California history enthusiast, he has photographed nearly all of the state’s historical landmarks.
  • He was recognized in 2014 as the CSU Long Beach College of Business Administration Alumnus of the Year.
