Founded in 1956, the Highway Trust Fund provides a more dependable source of funding from the federal government for the construction of the interstate highway system. Comprising two sub-funds including the Highway Account and the Mass Transit Account, funding from the HTF plays an important role in facilitating many projects. The Highway Trust Fund receives roughly 85 to 90 percent of its revenue from excise taxes on motor fuel, commonly known as the “gas tax.”
